When Omar Abdulkadir Artan stepped onto the pitch at the 2025 FIFA U‐20 World Cup in Chile, he carried more than just a referee’s notebook. He carried Somalia’s history, hope, and a symbol of possibility, he was the first Somali referee ever selected for a FIFA tournament and one of only three centre referees from Africa. For a man whose journey began on the dusty pitches of Mogadishu, this was a landmark achievement.

Born around 1992 in Mogadishu, Artan grew up in a country recovering from conflict, where opportunities in football were scarce and infrastructure limited. From early on, he developed a deep connection to the sport and pursued refereeing with determination, mastering the technical, physical, and mental demands. By 2018, he earned a place on the FIFA list of referees, opening doors to continental and global tournaments.

Domestically, Artan officiated Somalia’s First Division matches, building trust and experience. Internationally, he became the first Somali referee to oversee a CAF continental final, taking charge of the CAF Confederation Cup final between Egypt’s Pyramids FC and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. He also officiated Group E matches at the Africa Cup of Nations, demonstrating composure and authority.

In 2025, Artan was awarded CAF Best Male Referee of the Year in Rabat, Morocco, making headlines across Somalia. Political leaders publicly congratulated him, calling his achievement a symbol of national pride and inspiration for young Somalis aspiring to careers in sports. The Somali Minister of Youth and Sports also praised his role in elevating Somalia’s image internationally, showing that his journey is more than officiating, it is a statement of national resilience.

Artan’s achievements have inspired young Somalis to see refereeing as a legitimate career and prompted clubs and leagues to explore structured referee development programs. By consistently performing at the highest levels, he has challenged stereotypes about Somalia’s ability to produce world-class sports officials and helped elevate Somali football internationally.

Beyond officiating, Artan mentors aspiring referees, promoting modern techniques, continuous training, discipline, and ethical conduct. His career demonstrates that integrity, professionalism, and excellence are achievable even with limited resources, reinforcing that Somali football belongs on the global stage.

Ultimately, Artan’s journey is a symbol of possibility: even under challenging circumstances, Somali talent can make a global mark, inspire communities, and contribute to a lasting legacy for sports development in the Horn of Africa.
