Isaaq Awale’s journey from the rural village of Ceelgaal in Somalia’s Hiiraan region to becoming a transportation mogul in the United States is nothing short of remarkable. With resilience, determination, and an unwavering vision, Awale built one of Indiana’s most successful transportation companies, Royal Transportation.

From Nomadic Roots to Entrepreneurial Ambition
Awale’s early life was shaped by Somalia’s nomadic lifestyle, where constant movement was part of everyday life. This background instilled in him a deep sense of adaptability — a trait that would later define his entrepreneurial journey. Seeking better opportunities, Awale traveled across 15 countries, including time spent in Saudi Arabia’s military and working in India, before arriving in the United States.
In the U.S., Awale began working as a taxi driver in Seattle. However, seeking a more affordable lifestyle for his growing family, he relocated to Indianapolis. This decision marked the beginning of something extraordinary.
“Dadaal iyo samir midna laguma khasaaro — (Patience and hard work never go unrewarded). This Somali proverb reflects Awale’s journey, where persistence and learning proved crucial to overcoming early challenges.”
The Birth of Royal Transportation
In 2008, Awale founded Royal Transportation with just one town car and a vision. The early days were challenging — after three months in business, he had earned only seven dollars. Despite the slow start, Awale remained determined. He frequently visited downtown hotel lobbies, networking with staff and offering reliable service. His persistence paid off.
Today, Royal Transportation has grown into one of Indiana’s largest private car service providers, with a fleet of 86 vehicles, including town cars, shuttle buses, and motor coaches. The company serves a broad range of clients, including celebrities, business leaders, and political figures like former Vice President Mike Pence and President Joe Biden.
Commitment to Community
Awale’s success is matched by his dedication to giving back. He ensures that many of his employees are from the Somali community, providing them with stable employment and fostering a family-like work environment. The Royal Transportation compound in Indianapolis proudly flies the Somali flag, symbolizing Awale’s enduring connection to his roots.
His charitable efforts extend beyond Indiana. Awale has funded infrastructure projects in Beledweyne, Somalia, including road construction and support for disadvantaged families. He recently founded the Royal Foundation to expand his philanthropic impact.
A Reminder of Humble Beginnings
Despite his growing empire, Awale has held on to one important keepsake — a Chevrolet Caprice he purchased for $900 at a police auction. This vehicle, which started it all, remains a symbol of his journey. He dreams of one day driving it in Ceelgaal, a powerful reminder of how far he has come.
“Nin aan talo lahayn waa nin aan tub lahayn — (A man without plan is like a man without a path)..”
Words of Wisdom
Reflecting on his success, Awale emphasizes the importance of perseverance, goal-setting, and integrity. “Carve out your path, chart your journey carefully, and brace yourself for any obstacles. Constantly set goals and chase them relentlessly. Integrity is key.” He added, “Qof kasta oo guul doon ah waa inuu diyaar u noqdo inuu la kulmo caqabado, balse guusha waxay u baahan tahay samir iyo dulqaad.” — (Anyone seeking success must be prepared to face challenges, but success requires patience and resilience).
A True Somali Success Story
Isaaq Awale’s journey from a single car to building a transportation empire is a testament to unwavering resilience, foresight, and sheer determination. His story reflects the Somali spirit of persistence — a reminder that success is built on grit, patience, and calculated risk-taking. Awale’s rise from humble beginnings to becoming a transportation mogul offers invaluable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly within the Somali community, showing that no dream is too big when matched with dedication and strategic effort.
